Today is my birthday and the day started off just as I wanted alongside my husband and my sweet one year old (his 1st birthday was on May 3rd). Ah! I wouldn’t have it any other way because they are all I need. I get endless kisses and snuggles.
For today (Happy Birthday to anyone else who is a Taurus!), I figured I’d write a post to share thoughts I’ve had one time or another in these last months. I try to not only remind myself of these things as often as I can, but put them into practice as I continue understanding life and love – because they’re constantly changing and deepening along the way. I am far from perfect and there’s lots to work on. Many things, both fortunate and unfortunate, continue to reveal themselves in thousands of forms (that’s life!), but through each page or stage it is allowing me to continue to experience as I go and learn as I grow. I will figure out one day how it’s all connected. As long as I have the people that love me along the way, that’s all that matters!
So here’s what I got:
1) YOU NEVER KNOW…
I’ve put this as a number one for a reason. Plain and simple, you never know what someone’s story is or what he or she is going through in their life. Don’t judge. Period. You can try to understand what it’s like to walk in someone’s shoes, but it’s never the same. People will assume they know everything about you because they hear it through word of mouth, or something is shared on social media. I’m sure by now we’ve realized that what we hear or see probably isn’t always the full story. Life on social media looks flawless at times and not everyone likes wearing their heart on their sleeve. We compare our behind-the-scenes circumstances with everyone else’s public highlight reel, yet we really don’t know everyone’s internal struggles. On the other side of it, many people don’t constantly share everything which also says that it doesn’t mean that it’s not happening. Internal struggles can stay just that: internal and private. So, just be kind. Be kind because you never know.
2) MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS
Forget about what others are doing and saying and just mind your own business! Don’t compare material things, looks, what someone is spending their money on, how much they’re accomplishing, etc. Stop looking at where they are and what they have. Everyone’s situation is different and nobody is doing better than you because nobody can do better than YOU. Keep your eyes on your own path and just ignore the distractions. No one likes a nosy person anyway.
3) YOU THINK YOU HAVE TIME
Time is a true thief. You have all these things in your mind you set out to do, and then you blink and it’s gone. The trouble is, you always think you have more time than you do. “I’ll start that diet next week” or “I’ll call her tomorrow.” But one day you wake up and there won’t be any more time to work on the things we’ve always wanted to do. At that point, you either will have achieved the goals you set for yourself (or at least made attempts), or you will have a list of excuses for why you haven’t.
4.) ACCEPT CHANGE
Many don’t like change. Once we get used to something, if it works then why change it, right? Unfortunately the world doesn’t work that way because our environment is ever-changing whether we like it or not. Embrace change. This is probably one of the hardest for us all (and a lot for me the past few years) because, well….. (read onto #5)
5) YOU CAN’T CONTROL EVERYTHING
We all, in some way, want to try to control the outcome of some kind of relationship, drama, work, friendship, etc. We may not like this saying, but we have to also accept sometimes that ‘it is, what it is’. Trying to control a situation or change people into something they’re not only makes it harder on you. People are set in their ways for their own reasons. Maybe you’ve heard this, but I absolutely love “The Serenity Prayer” (and you don’t have to be religious to understand the message here). It works for both #4 above and #5:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
6) DON’T TAKE THINGS PERSONALLY
Constructive criticsm is good, but even then its not always welcomed by everyone. No matter the situation you’re in, people will always criticize you. It doesn’t always mean it’s a personal attack. Perhaps they just feel empowered to have a voice. You have to try your best not to take it to heart. People want to have and voice their opinion. You can’t let it get to you.
7) REMEMBER WHAT YOUR PARENTS TAUGHT YOU
This is one that I have to actually force myself to think about because I forget it a lot. You learn things when you’re a child from your parents, as well as from friends or the world around you, too. But think about and remember the things your parents have taught you. I am much more aware of this now that I am raising my son. I want him to be a kind person, to share, give, and all the true fundamentals my parents taught me. All the things such as taking responsibility for your actions, respecting yourself, etc. Those morals and values are some of the most important lessons you may get and it comes from the most sacred place of love that exists.
8) BE PRESENT
We should be like babies and live in the now. I’ve recognized this from my son in the past year. Babies don’t know anything but the present, and that is refreshing. Being present is a tough one for many of us now that social media plays an extremely big role in our lives. Technology has grown leaps and bounds and we all want to show off. Our faces are hidden in phones. We want to announce to everyone what we are doing, where we are, who we are with, or the awesome things we are seeing at the moment. We can’t let that consume our time, all the time. We need to be present because now is all we have.
9) YOUR THOUGHTS ARE POWERFUL
Your mind is a powerful thing. If you think negatively, you will see negatively and it can affect everything. You have to make the choice each day and realize how you are thinking controls a lot. No matter how big a challenge seems, your mind can be greater and your thoughts are powerful. So, give yourself powerful affirmations.
10) BE GRATEFUL
Whether that’s through verbalizing it to someone, praying, or returning favors, be grateful. You don’t always have to only be grateful for huge things, but all the small things in your daily life. The small stuff always adds up to big stuff. There are endless things to think about, for example, like how you even have a shirt on your back to people that care about you. Times will get tough in life, but believe we can all find something to be grateful for.
I hope this serves as a good reminder for all of us. Do what works for you.
I’m curious to know what you would add to this? There are so many good ones and the list would be extremely long. Please comment below with one of yours. What is one lesson you have learned from life that completely changed or transformed you?
